Dear Cristián Carvallo,

It is with great pleasure and interest that I write to you requesting permission to acquire the use of a photograph of yours for a feature story in our upcoming publication of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Year Book 2011. I recently came across an exceptional photograph of yours on the following website: http://www.emol.com/mundografico/?F_ID=676342 and found the image on your blog as well: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_feLlGksMQfE/SWYXKhTsjaI/AAAAAAAAAJs/g5sBqbS72RA/s1600-h/MEDICIONES+EN+GLACIAR+ECHAURREN+8.jpg The photograph would be perfect for a section we are doing on world environmental indicators, next to a graph from WGMS showing Mountain Glacier Mass Balance. Your photo would be great because it is on one of the monitored glaciers and if my guess is correct then you are measuring the melting peak. If we may use the photo then please send us a high resolution version to: marton.balint at unep.org

We would be extremely grateful and honoured to capitalize on your valuable talents. Unfortunately, given our extremely meager production budget we are not able to offer financial remuneration, just prominent credit/ acknowledgement in our publication and the satisfaction of contributing to a good cause, the environment.

The production of the UNEP Year Book series is part of UNEP’s portfolio of information materials to bridge the gap between science and policy and enhance awareness among various constituents so that they are better informed to improve decision-making and policy development and implementation at different levels. The document also serves as a retrospective information doc for Governments at UNEP's Governing Council - and therefore a platform for interaction and discussions between researchers and policy-makers to improve the uptake of science in policy decision-making.
Here is a link to last year’s publication: http://www.unep.org/yearbook/2010/

Thank you very much in advance for your consideration. I look forward to discussing this matter further at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,
Marton
